Our Story

Journey Through Our South West Kids Clinic Timeline:

Our journey began with a deep-rooted passion for helping children thrive. It all started when our founder embarked on a fulfilling career as an Occupational Therapist in the paediatric department of a local Sydney hospital. Over time, she rose to lead the paediatric OT team, driven by her unwavering dedication to children with neurological conditions.

In 2006, she established Handy Kids Occupational Therapy. What started as a solo venture on Saturdays at a tutoring centre quickly blossomed into a full-time commitment, fueled by the growing demand for her services. She transitioned from cramped quarters into a cosy clinic space equipped with two therapy rooms.

Our journey truly gained momentum when we listened to the frustrations of parents traversing the area for various allied health services. Recognising an opportunity to make a difference, she invited trusted colleagues to join forces under one roof, forming a consortium dedicated to holistic care for children. Starting with Speech Pathology and later expanding to include Physiotherapy, our multidisciplinary approach aims to ease the burden on families while ensuring seamless, comprehensive therapy.

As demand soared, so did our team of Occupational Therapists, prompting another move to accommodate the families seeking our services. In 2010, we proudly rebranded as South West Kids Clinic, a testament to our commitment to multidisciplinary intervention. With the addition of in-house Physiotherapists and Speech Pathologists, we fortified our ability to deliver quality care to both our team and the families we serve.

By 2014, our growth necessitated yet another relocation to a larger complex, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter. Over the next six years, our focus remained unwavering: to empower our team and enhance the services we provide. We invested in state-of-the-art technology, introduced hydrotherapy, and even deployed a fleet of SWKC cars to ensure accessibility for all.

In 2019, we embarked on a journey to design our current clinic space, spanning over 1000 square metres. Our vision was clear: to create an environment that nurtured both our team’s growth and our clients’ clinical outcomes. This included streamlining services for children with physical disabilities, an area with limited local resources.

This commitment led to the inception of South West Kids REHAB, a dedicated service for children with physical disabilities. We spared no effort in expanding our offerings, seeking expertise from around the globe to train our team in cutting-edge rehabilitation techniques. Our clinic underwent significant enhancements, including accessible facilities and specially designed equipment, all aimed at empowering children to reach their fullest potential.

As we look ahead, we are filled with excitement for the future and the countless opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of the remarkable families we are privileged to serve.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to start therapy?
The best time to start therapy is when you notice any developmental delays or concerns in your child. Early intervention is crucial as it can significantly improve the effectiveness of the treatment, helping your child achieve the best possible outcomes.

The frequency of therapy sessions typically depends on your child’s specific needs and goals during the initial assessment. Most children benefit from weekly sessions, but we may suggest more or fewer visits based on your child’s progress.

Put simply, the greater your involvement is in therapy, the quicker your child will gain results. For this reason, we only work with families actively involved in their child’s therapy. This includes collaborating to establish goals, participating in therapy sessions, completing practice between sessions and providing feedback to your therapist about progress between sessions.
Our team conducts comprehensive assessments to understand each child’s strengths and challenges. Based on these assessments, we develop individualised therapy plans that are continually adapted to reflect progress and changing needs.
You can contact our clinic directly or via email to discuss your child’s needs. Our reception team will ask quick questions about your child to determine the next steps required.
Therapy sessions are primarily completed in our clinic; however, we occasionally recommend contacting the school or child care to observe your child and consult with the teachers regarding valuable strategies to promote success in the classroom or playground. Occasionally, ongoing sessions are suggested; however, this is based on clinical need rather than convenience.
